To give a little back-story, I've been interested in physics and space all my life, and I intend to do physics at University. STARGAZING LIVE with Brian Cox and Dara O' Brian was on recently, and it has inspired me to get into astronomy and maybe join the local Astronomy Society (one I find out where they meet).

Anyway, I've done some research over the past few days and know a little bit of jargon, but please go slow for me. I've decided to either spend around £400-£500 because I would really love to look into space with an 8 or 10 inch aperture.

I think these are quite good telescopes but I would like your input and maybe other suggestions, but they have to be available within the UK (where I live):

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SkyWatcher-Skyliner-200P-1200-Classic-Telescope/dp/B001CITYFG/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=IPD6XTD74EFER&colid=41V4RN4PNAF6

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SkyWatcher-Explorer-200P-1000-EQ5-Telescope/dp/B002OTZZPA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=IOZLXD2MZ7DEH&colid=41V4RN4PNAF6

If I were spending less it would be between these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Skywatcher-SKYLINER-150P-PARABOLIC-DOBSONIAN-TELESCOPE/dp/B005KBR5P2/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I294HX42SLKT1V&colid=41V4RN4PNAF6

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Skywatcher-Explorer-Newtonian-Reflector-Telescope/dp/B004N0J66M/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2T7KTHA4EOBQ6&colid=41V4RN4PNAF6

NOTE: Is an automatic mount (like the Skywatcher Syn Scan) and is a Dobsonian or Equatorial (?, tripod one) mount better, considering that I'd like it to be able to be relatively portable but also good value for money.

Thanks.

My Explorer Newtonian Reflector is showing a diagonal image (eg streetlight pole tilted to diagonal instead of normal up/down vertical) I know the image is inverted through eyepiece but its not supposed to be turned 20-30 degrees approx diagonally is it? I'm a noobie so any help will be appreciated. ---- thank you.

Telescope is - Sky-Watcher Explorer 130p Reflector
Thank you for that answer I feel better for it. Although one of the reasons i asked is the telescope was showing a vertical streetlight pole two or three days ago which aligned nicely with my finderscope, now however im not sure that the finderscope will remain as accurate and that maybe my mirror is out of alignment. And why cant i adjust this angle using the eyepiece screws?

Thanks again.
The answers are fully appreciated as i'm still learning and any knowledge is a great help to me. I am having trouble with the general math and how images change as they get bounced between mirrors etc.
My 'scope is new and was only recently set up. It is attached to an AZ goto computerised SynScan type mount (Dovetail clamp) set up as instructed on the right side.
So when the main tube is horizontal facing straight forward, the finderscope sticks up and out from a mount that is off center several degrees to the right (if you are looking forward from behind) and tilts diagonally 20-30 degrees approx. away from the vertical. Likewise, the eyepiece (looking from behind, along the main tube) is at approx. 45 degree angle, mounted on its base on the top of the left side, with the finderscope and eyepeice making a kind of V shape that is over to the left (again, from behind looking forward) . This seems to be the only way it can be set up as the mounts are already fixed onto the op
tical tube. and the computerised alt-azimuth AZ-Goto mount can only be attached one way. When i set it up a few days ago using the streetlight pole the invterted image, as far as i recall, was straight top-bottom vertical, but now the inverted streetlight pole is diagonal eg. \ instead of | - I apologise for the confusing question and my inability to explain but being inexperienced the tech-jargon escapes me as does the intricate equipment and its complex functions.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated, Jay.
Ps. Can anyone suggest a website i can easily join? as i have a million and one questions and only a few sparce pages of instruction manual to go by. Thanks again.

I'd like to know if anyone with experience using this telescope configuration can make a recommendation. I could upgrade to the Orion Sirius mount but they only offer it in the GoTo configuration (for some reason), and I don't necessarily want to spend the extra money on that right now. I'm hoping that the SkyView Pro mount is adequate for the 8" Newtonian. Plus I like that I can upgrade it to GoTo later if need be. I've read that the gears are stiff though.

The 8" dobsonian is also an option, but I like the tracking ability of the equatorial mount.
Yet another option is the Celestron C8-NGT on the CG-5GT mount. Long term (with a computerized mount) it seems to be the cheapest way to go since the payload capacity of this mount is about the same as the Sirius. Even though it's a cousin to the SkyView Pro mount, the CG-5GT has 2" steel legs as compared to the 1.75" legs on the SVP....hmmm
An 8" SCT is probably out of my budget. The Celestron 8" SCT on the CG-5GT mount is 00+. I don't plan to do astrophotography right now.
